The Roman religion is called Roman mythology. They believed in hundreds of Gods and Goddesses. Such as Jupiter (Zeus), Mercury (Hermes), Neptune (Poseidon), Mars (Ares) etc. They would have prayed and worshiped these Gods whenever and particularly after the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. Some of the people who were trying to run away may have been praying or screaming to their Gods while trying to escape the toxic, death fumes. But out of the 16, 000 people who were covered in the ash, mud and rocks, we will never know if they had put their faith in their Gods. Their religion was a big part in the eruption as they would have felt that they needed guidance for what to do next. If everything and everyone in Brisbane city was covered by hot mud and there were 16, 000 people suffocated in the ash, and your whole family was buried in the torture. What would you want to do next? Would you run or help? They needed to ask their Gods for help. Especially for the people who were scared and had no family left. In ancient Rome they had religious festivals with processions, music and animal sacrifices. It is believed that the Romans had many of these festivals after the eruption of Mt Vesuvius.

The first citizens of Rome believed they were watched over by the spirits of their ancestors. So during the time of the eruption the people of Rome believed that they could feel the ancestors over them. Early forms of the Roman religion were animistic in nature, believing that spirits inhabited everything around them, people included. But in many societies ancient and modern religion has performed a major role in their development, and the Roman Empire was no different, and due to the presence of Greek colonies, the Romans adopted many of the Greek gods as their own. However, all of their gods would be washed away eventually, gradually replaced by Christianity, and in the eyes of some, this change brought about the decline of the western empire.

Source two as a website is an average reliable secondary source. You never know if something is the complete truth. Though it shows pictures and lots of info about what you are researching. It seems very reliable and I am happy to have used the history encyclopaedia website. It gave me the information that I needed.
